🛢️ Mongolia Accelerates Oil Refinery Development to Strengthen Energy Security 🏗️

Construction of Mongolia’s oil refinery in Altanshiree, Dornogovi Province, is progressing at an accelerated pace. Amid continued geopolitical uncertainty, the project remains strategically important for strengthening Mongolia’s energy security and reducing its dependence on imported petroleum products.

  • 🏗️ Construction progress: Equipment and technological facilities for the refinery are being delivered in phases, while installation works are advancing.

  • 🚢 Equipment transportation: The Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) column and Vacuum Distillation Unit (VDU) column have been transported by sea from Mumbai, India, to Tianjin Port in China. They are scheduled to be transported onward by road to the refinery site in Dornogovi Province.

  • ⛽ Strategic significance: Once operational, the refinery is expected to contribute significantly to meeting domestic demand for petroleum products and reducing Mongolia’s reliance on imports. The Government has stated that it is taking the necessary decisions to facilitate and accelerate the implementation of the project.

  • 🛢️ Increasing domestic oil production: Under the Production Sharing Agreement with PetroChina, a long-standing legal issue concerning an oil field that had remained unresolved for approximately 30 years has been addressed, creating an opportunity to increase domestic oil production capacity.
