⚡ Mongolia Commissions New 220 kV Substation to Strengthen Energy Security 🏭

In partnership with

Mongolia has officially commissioned the 220 kV “Zes Oyu” substation, a strategic energy infrastructure project that will enable the country to import up to 80 MW of electricity from China while enhancing the reliability and resilience of the national power system.

The substation, financed by Oyu Tolgoi LLC and commissioned at the Oyu Tolgoi mining complex in Umnugovi Province, will operate in parallel with the Inner Mongolia power grid, providing additional electricity during periods of peak winter demand and reducing pressure on Mongolia’s central power system.

Key highlights include:

  • Up to 80 MW of electricity can now be imported from China during peak demand.

  • The facility strengthens electricity supply for Oyu Tolgoi while improving grid reliability across southern Mongolia.

  • The project includes a 220 kV substation with six feeder bays and approximately 3 km of transmission infrastructure.

  • The new connection supports Mongolia’s long-term objective of securing reliable energy supplies for major industrial projects and future domestic power generation.

🏗️ Energy Minister Naidalaa B. stated that the project represents an important milestone in strengthening Mongolia’s energy security, supporting regional power cooperation, and ensuring a more stable electricity supply during periods of high demand.

🤝 The project was implemented through close cooperation between the Ministry of Energy, the National Power Transmission Grid, the National Dispatching Center, Oyu Tolgoi LLC, Inner Mongolia Power Group, and more than 20 domestic companies, involving nearly 2,000 engineers and technical specialists.
